Peter Dutton has officially conceded defeat, addressing Liberal Party supporters gathered in Brisbane on election night. The loss marks a double blow for Dutton: not only has the Coalition been defeated by Labor, but he also appears to have lost his own long-held seat of Dickson. Despite the heavy loss, Dutton struck a tone of determination and optimism. “We worked hard every day over the course of the last three years to do our best for our amazing country,” he said. “One of the great honours of being the leader of this party is that we have met people from every side and every corner, the length and breadth of this country. There are many amazing stories — people have sacrificed, and people are doing it hard at the moment — and I have always wanted, in public life, for our country and the best for every Australian.” Reflecting on his political career, Dutton highlighted his tenure as Defence Minister as a particular high point. He went on to accept responsibility for the election loss and confirmed he had spoken to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to offer his congratulations. “I congratulated the Prime Minister and wished he, Jodie, and Nathan all the very best,” Dutton said. “I said to the Prime Minister that his mother would be incredibly proud of his achievement tonight, and he should be proud of what he has achieved.” He also revealed he had spoken with Labor’s Ali France, who will succeed him as the new Member for Dickson. “Ali and I have been combatants for a number of elections, but she was successful in Dickson tonight, and she will do a good job as a local member. She lost her son Henry in tragic circumstances, and no parent should ever go through that. I said to Ali that her son Henry would be incredibly proud of her tonight, and I wish her all the very best.” Moving on to express his gratitude, Dutton thanked Nationals leader David Littleproud and deputy leader Sussan Ley, along with his own shadow treasurer Angus Taylor and other senior colleagues. “It is not our night, as I point out, and there are good members and candidates who have lost their seats, their ambition, and I am sorry for that.” He praised his team and staff, calling them “just amazing,” and gave special recognition to his media team. Becoming visibly emotional, Dutton then turned his attention to his family, acknowledging their unwavering support. “I am blessed to have an amazing family — Bec, Harry and Tom. They have stood by me through thick and thin, and I am grateful for their support and their love.” Reflecting on his lengthy career representing Dickson, he noted the seat’s historical trend: “Dickson had a one-term curse,” he said, “but I held the seat for 24 years,” thanking his constituents for their long-standing support.

Dutton Vows Liberal Party Will Rebuild
As he brought his concession speech to a close, Dutton promised that the Liberal Party would regroup and remain committed to its core values. “Our Liberal families are hurting across the country tonight, including in my electorate of Dickson, and I want to say thank you very much to all of them,” he said. “I love this country and have fought hard for it. We have been defined by our opponents in this election, which is not a true story of who we are — but we will rebuild from here.” Dutton then stood on stage with his family, embracing them warmly as he finished his address. The crowd responded with loud applause and cheers as he walked off stage. As he exited, media attempted to question him, but Dutton continued walking without stopping. Meanwhile, at Albanese’s election night event, Labor supporters reacted to Dutton’s speech with a spontaneous, symbolic gesture. Hundreds of people raised their arms and waved goodbye to the image of Dutton on the TV screen. Chants of “Albo, Albo” soon followed.
