Today, around 300 people, including members of the diplomatic community, business leaders, Rwandans, and friends of Rwanda, gathered in Singapore to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Rwanda's Liberation Day. This significant event highlighted the enduring bonds between Rwanda and Singapore, as well as Rwanda's remarkable journey of recovery and growth following the atrocities of the 1994 genocide. In his remarks, Rwanda’s High Commissioner in Singapore, Jean de Dieu Uwihanganye, emphasized the profound impact of the Rwandan Patriotic Army's (RPA) victory over the genocidal government three decades ago. He noted that this triumph marked the beginning of Rwanda’s rebirth, setting the nation on a path towards development and the fulfillment of its national aspirations. The High Commissioner praised Singapore for its crucial role in Rwanda’s post-genocide prosperity, pointing to the robust bilateral trade, investments, and cooperation in key sectors such as financial technology, environment, information and technology, education, and law enforcement and security. Singapore's Senior Minister of State for Communications and Information, and Health, Dr. Janil Puthucheary, lauded Rwanda’s post-liberation journey as a beacon of hope not only for Rwandans but for the global community. Drawing inspiration from President Paul Kagame’s speech at Kwibuka30 in Kigali this April, where the President underscored that “the foundation of everything is unity,” Dr. Puthucheary remarked, “Rwanda’s incredible journey of healing and transformation over the last three decades exemplifies this, and serves as an inspiration to the world.” Dr. Puthucheary further highlighted the shared values that underpin the strong friendship between Singapore and Rwanda, stating, “A harmonious and united society is a fundamental condition for progress and prosperity. It is upon these shared values that Singapore and Rwanda have built a firm friendship.” The commemoration in Singapore not only celebrated Rwanda's liberation and subsequent progress but also reinforced the enduring partnership between the two nations. As Rwanda continues to advance on its path of unity and development, the support and collaboration of international partners like Singapore remain vital in achieving its long-term goals.
