Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick faces a defining week as his side prepare for challenging fixtures against Atlético Madrid and Leeds United following a disappointing run of results.

United have won just one of their last six matches across all competitions, with their latest setback coming in a 1-1 Premier League draw against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday. Despite Tottenham playing with 10 men, Dominic Solanke scored a late equaliser to deny United victory.

Writing in his latest Sky Sports column on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, football pundit Paul Merson expressed concern about United’s recent performances, questioning whether Carrick has demonstrated sufficient improvement in the team’s play.

The Manchester club now face a difficult trip to Atlético Madrid in the UEFA Champions League before travelling to Elland Road to meet fierce rivals Leeds United on Sunday, October 18.

Atlético Madrid are known for their defensive organisation and ability to compete in demanding European fixtures, making the encounter a significant challenge for Carrick’s side.

The subsequent match against Leeds carries additional pressure because of the longstanding rivalry between the two clubs. Leeds will be looking to capitalise on home advantage, while United need positive results to restore confidence among their supporters.

Carrick previously earned praise after guiding United through a successful spell that helped secure Champions League qualification. However, Merson believes the current difficult period will test the coach’s ability to respond to adversity and find solutions when results are not going his way.

Meanwhile, Tottenham received credit for their resilience after recovering against United despite being reduced to 10 players. Merson nevertheless highlighted the London club’s need for a consistent goalscorer to improve their attacking effectiveness.

For Carrick, the coming fixtures present an opportunity to reverse United’s disappointing form, rebuild confidence and ease the growing scrutiny surrounding his leadership. Further setbacks, however, could intensify questions about the club’s immediate direction.
