Two hundred twenty two (222) Rwandans, including 69 families made up of 12 men, 58 women, and 152 children, voluntarily returned to Rwanda from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Thursday, November 6. The group crossed into Rwanda through the La Corniche One Stop Border Post in Rubavu District, where they were received by Rubavu District Mayor Prosper Muhirwa. They were later taken to the Nyarushishi Transit Centre for registration and further assistance. According to the Ministry in Charge of Emergency Management, the latest arrivals bring the total number of returnees from the DRC to 5,167 since January 2025. “The Government of Rwanda remains committed to ensuring the sustainable reintegration of returnees through access to education, healthcare, and other essential services that foster social cohesion and empower them to rebuild their lives alongside host communities,” the ministry said in a statement on X. Many of the returnees said they had been misinformed while in the DRC, told that they would face mistreatment if they returned to Rwanda. Upon arrival, returnees receive initial support, including $188 for adults and $133 for minors, to help them rebuild their lives. Each returnee also receives basic food supplies worth RWF 45,000.
