On Thursday evening, President Paul Kagame, alongside FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, unveiled a Rwanda-made "Cross Car" designed and built by students from IPRC Kigali. The event took place at the Kigali Convention Centre, coinciding with the ongoing FIA General Assembly, which concludes on Friday, December 13, 2024. The unveiling ceremony also saw the presence of RAC President Christian Gakwaya. This Cross Car, developed over a month with assistance from an FIA technician, highlights Rwanda’s growing innovation in motorsport. Dutch Formula One champion Max Verstappen is set to test the vehicle as part of FIA-related commitments. Following the launch, a gala dinner celebrating FIA's 120th anniversary brought together high-profile guests, including entertainer Steve Harvey. The FIA General Assembly will conclude with an awards ceremony at BK Arena, recognizing outstanding motorsport athletes. The Cross Car features critical safety elements like a six-point harness system, protective steel framing, specialized tires, and an emergency shutdown system. Although compact, it requires specialized training, distinguishing it from traditional rally cars. Plans are underway to introduce more Cross Cars for a dedicated championship, enhancing Rwanda's motorsport scene.
