President Kagame arrived in Apia, the capital city of Samoa, on Tuesday, October 22, for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2024 (CHOGM).

Upon his arrival, President Kagame was received by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Customs and Revenue Tuala Tevaga Iosefo Ponifasio.

President Paul Kagame has chaired the Commonwealth since 2022.

In 2009, Rwanda became the 54th member of the Commonwealth, the first country to join the Commonwealth under the revised membership criteria endorsed at the 2007 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Kampala, and one of only two members without historic ties to the United Kingdom.

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2024 takes place in Apia, Samoa from 21-26 October 2024. This is the first CHOGM held in a Pacific Small Island Developing State.

Building on progress since CHOGM 2022 in Rwanda, leaders will deliberate on global economic, environmental, and security challenges, discussing how Commonwealth countries can work together to build resilience, boost trade, innovation, growth, and empower the Commonwealth’s 1.5 billion young people for a more peaceful and sustainable future.

Fifty-six independent countries make up the Commonwealth in Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe, and the Pacific.

The combined GDP of Commonwealth countries in 2021 was US$13.1 trillion and is estimated to reach $19.5 trillion in 2027, almost doubling in ten years from $10.4 trillion in 2017.
