PresidentPaul Kagame on Tuesday, November 11, arrived in Conakry where he was welcomed by Guinean President Mamadi Doumbouya. According to the Office of the President, the President is in Guinea for the launch of the Simandou Iron Ore Project, the largest ongoing mining project in the world, and for this year’s Transform Africa Summit. The Simandou iron ore project is a massive mining venture in Guinea, home to one of the world's richest high-grade iron ore deposits, estimated 2.4 billion tonnes of iron ore, with a high grade of around 65% iron. After decades of delays due to complex logistics and ownership disputes, the project is now operational, with initial ore shipments commencing and full production expected to reach 60 million tons annually, significantly impacting the global iron ore market. Development requires extensive new infrastructure, including a 622-kilometer railway and a deep-water port, which are being built alongside the mines to transport the ore to the Atlantic coast. On November 12, Presidents Kagame and Doumbouya will also officially open the Transform Africa Summit (TAS), a pan-African conference dedicated to accelerating the continent’s development. Organized by the Smart Africa Alliance, the summit will bring together President Kagame, other heads of state, and participants from across the continent to discuss the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in driving innovation and fostering transformation in Africa and beyond. Leaders and innovators will exchange insights on how AI can be leveraged to boost Africa’s economy, strengthen governance, and promote sustainable innovation.
