President Paul Kagame met with Louise Mushikiwabo, Secretary-General of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at Urugwiro Village to fruitful collaboration between Rwanda and the OIF. Louise Mushikiwabo has served as the Secretary-General of La Francophonie since January 2019, following her election by French-speaking heads of state and government during their meeting in Yerevan, Armenia, in October 2018. She was re-elected for a second term during the Djerba Summit in November 2022. Rwanda has been a member of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) since 1970 and has collaborated with the organization on numerous projects. The OIF has partnered with Rwanda to enhance the quality of French language teaching and education. This includes initiatives such as a volunteer teacher mobility project and the revitalization of Centres de lecture et d'animation culturelle (CLAC). In collaboration with the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), the OIF organized a mission focused on economic and commercial cooperation. Additionally, the OIF worked with the Ministry of ICT and Innovation to establish the D-Clic project, which provides training in digital skills. Through the "La Francophonie Avec Elles" fund, the OIF has supported projects in Kigali and Ndera aimed at helping women achieve economic independence. Rwanda also participated in the 2024 Village de la Francophonie, an event that highlighted the cultural diversity of OIF member states. The OIF provides its 93 States and governments with support in developing or consolidating their policies and carries out international policy and multilateral cooperation actions. The OIF's mission is to promote the French language, cultural and linguistic diversity, peace, democracy, and human rights. It also supports education, training, higher education, and research.
