President Paul Kagame, on Tuesday, July 29, at Urugwiro Village, received the credentials of Gao Wenqi, the new Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Rwanda, according to the Office of the President. Gao Wenqi replaces Wang Xuekun, who had served as the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China since August 2022. Rwanda and China collaborate in various sectors. The two countries established diplomatic relations in 1971, and their political partnership has grown significantly since then. In March 2024, during the 9th session of the Rwanda-China Joint Committee on Economic, Technical, and Trade Cooperation (JETTCO), both nations reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties. Discussions focused on aligning Rwanda’s Vision 2050 with China’s Belt and Road Initiative and accelerating projects in infrastructure, agriculture, and technology. The two countries also cooperate in defense, as demonstrated by high-level visits between officials. On August 9, 2024, President Paul Kagame received Lt. Gen. Huang Xucong, Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff of the Central Theater Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, along with his delegation, who were on a four-day official visit to Rwanda. Their discussions focused on strengthening cooperation between the Rwanda Defence Force and the Chinese People’s Liberation Army. In September 2024, on the sidelines of the China-Africa Summit (FOCAC) in Beijing, President Paul Kagame met with Chinese President Xi Jinping. During that meeting, the Heads of State reaffirmed their commitment to a multipolar global governance system based on sovereignty, self-determination, and shared values.
