President Paul Kagame, on the afternoon of Tuesday, June 24, received former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo at Urugwiro Village. Obasanjo is serving as one of the facilitators of the merged Luanda-Nairobi peace process for eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). According to the Office of the President, they discussed the situation in the region, along with various key issues of continental and global significance. "The two leaders shared insights on pathways toward stability, cooperation, and progress," Urugwiro Village posted on X. Obasanjo is one of the mediators appointed by the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to support the Congolese people in reaching an agreement and jointly seeking ways to restore peace and security in the DRC. This mediation effort comes at a time when talks are ongoing in Qatar between the DRC government and the M23/AFC coalition, aimed at ending the three-year conflict and jointly addressing its root causes. Obasanjo served as the President of Nigeria twice: first from 1976 to 1979, and then from 1999 to 2007. He is regarded as one of the most experienced statesmen on the African continent and is often called upon to represent Africa’s voice on important issues.
