General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Chief of Defence Forces of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and Senior Presidential Adviser for Special Operations, has stated that Rwanda and Uganda are countries bound by shared history and blood, both desiring lasting peace, deep friendship, and strong cooperation. He conveyed this message on his X account on Friday, July 4, 2025, as he wished Rwandans a happy 31st Liberation Day. Every year on July 4, Rwandans celebrate Liberation Day, marking the moment when the Rwanda Patriotic Army (RPA) stopped the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Liberation Day reflects the resilience of the men and women who sacrificed their lives to build a foundation upon which every Rwandan can be proud to call their country home. Gen. Muhoozi wrote in Kinyarwanda, translated into English, "My friends in Rwanda, I wish you a happy #Liberation31. We remember the heroes who stopped the genocide, restored hope, and brought development." "President Paul Kagame and his soldiers carried out a heroic act that the whole world will always remember," he added. The CDF of the Ugandan Army emphasized that Rwanda and Uganda are united by shared history and blood. "We seek lasting peace, strong friendship, and deep cooperation between our peoples," he said. Gen. Muhoozi has played a significant role in restoring Rwanda–Uganda relations, which had been strained. Since 2022, he has made official visits to Kigali aimed at improving diplomatic ties and reducing tensions between Kampala and Kigali. During this period, he initiated celebrations known as Rukundo Egumeho (Let Love Prevail), which bring together Ugandans and Rwandans.
