Rwanda's satellite ground facility has become the first fully certified teleport in Sub-Saharan Africa, after an independent international audit recognised the Rwamagana-based station as meeting globally accepted operational standards. Rwanda's satellite ground facility has become the first fully certified teleport in Sub-Saharan Africa, after an independent international audit recognised the Rwamagana-based station as meeting globally accepted operational standards. The Rwanda Space Agency announced on Wednesday that its teleport in Mwulire, Rwamagana District, had received Tier 3 Certification from the World Teleport Association, making it the second certified teleport on the African continent and the first such facility operated by a national space agency anywhere in the world to earn the recognition. A teleport is a ground-based station that links satellites in orbit to terrestrial users and networks, providing the infrastructure backbone for services ranging from broadband internet to Earth observation data delivery. The World Teleport Association's certification programme conducts independent technical audits assessing a facility's reliability, operational procedures, infrastructure, and service delivery standards. Certifications run on a scale from Tier 1 to Tier 4, with Tier 4 the highest. Rwanda's Full Tier 3 Certification is valid for three years. Prior to this, no facility in Sub-Saharan Africa held full certification. Egypt's Nilesat is the only other certified facility on the continent, while a facility in Cameroon holds provisional status only. "This achievement reflects Rwanda's long-term vision to develop a competitive and future-oriented space sector," RSA Chief Executive Gaspard Twagirayezu said. Randall Barney, Executive Director of the World Teleport Association, said the certification points to growing technical sophistication across Africa's satellite communications sector. The 20-hectare Rwamagana facility is open to third-party investors seeking to install satellite ground stations, with RSA providing maintenance and connectivity services to co-locators. The RSA, established in 2020, also operates a geospatial data hub and skills development programmes, and is developing a hyperspectral CubeSat targeting launch later this year.
