Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Amb. Olivier Nduhungirehe, held a constructive phone call with Péter Szijjártó, Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade. According to a post on X by Rwanda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, February 18, they discussed enhancing bilateral relations between Rwanda and Hungary. The two ministers also exchanged views on the situation in eastern DRC, particularly in light of the positive outcomes from recent regional summits. Rwanda and Hungary have been deepening their bilateral ties through various cooperative agreements and initiatives in recent years. In July 2023, during the former Hungarian President Katalin Novák’s state visit to Rwanda, the two nations signed an agreement to extend the Stipendium Hungaricum Program. Under this extension, 60 selected Rwandan students will receive scholarships over the next three years to pursue higher education in Hungary. During the same visit, a memorandum of understanding on nuclear education was signed. This agreement facilitates the training of Rwandan experts in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, supporting Rwanda’s future energy plans. In February 2020, Hungary and Rwanda signed a comprehensive strategic development cooperation agreement. This accord established a $50 million tied aid loan fund, enabling Hungarian enterprises to implement development projects in Rwanda. Planned initiatives include the establishment of a poultry farm, the enhancement of border protection technologies, the production of identification documents, and the creation of a cybersecurity institute. To further strengthen their partnership, Rwanda has announced plans to open a diplomatic mission in Budapest. This move aims to foster a conducive environment for business and enhance bilateral relations.
