On behalf of the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) leadership, Major General Wilson Gumisiriza, Commander of the Mechanised Infantry Division, briefed the Rwanda Security Forces (RSF) contingent ahead of their deployment to Cabo Delgado Province, Mozambique. The briefing, held at Kami Military Barracks in Kigali on Thursday, 30 January 2025, included members of the RDF and the Rwanda National Police (RNP) as they prepared for their mission, based on bilateral arrangements between Rwanda and Mozambique.

Addressing the contingent, Major General Gumisiriza urged them to uphold RDF values, maintain discipline, and embody teamwork to effectively represent Rwanda. This mission highlights the ongoing partnership between Rwanda and Mozambique, reinforcing agreements that strengthen cooperation between the two nations. Rwanda first deployed troops to Cabo Delgado in July 2021 at the request of the Mozambican government to combat an Islamic State-linked insurgency. Rwandan troops, working alongside Mozambican forces, have played a key role in stabilizing terrorist-affected districts in Cabo Delgado. Currently, security has been restored in many parts of the province. Schools are reopening, residents are returning to their homes, and terrorist fighters are retreating into the forests. The Rwandan Security Forces continue to support the Mozambican government in reinstating state authority in Cabo Delgado through combat operations, security missions, and participation in stabilization and security sector reform.
