Rwanda welcomed 153 asylum seekers evacuated from Libya. They are from five nationalities: 82 Sudanese, 56 Eritrean, 5 Somali, 9 Ethiopian, and 1 South Sudanese.

The migrants arrived at Kigali International Airport on the night of Thursday, December 28.

The Ministry in Charge of Emergency Management announced that the asylum seekers will be accommodated at the Gashora Transit Center, where other evacuees who arrived before are hosted.

These migrants have joined more than 500 others who were already accommodated in the Gashora camp located in the Bugesera district, while searching for countries that can host them.

In 2019, the Government of Rwanda, in collaboration with the African Union, UNHCR, and other partners, set up a program to help migrants who had been living in various camps in Libya while waiting to reach Europe.

So far, a total of 2059 evacuees have been received in 16 batches. 68% of them have been resettled in third countries: Canada 381, Sweden 255, Norway 193, USA 168, France 141, Finland 187, Netherlands 82, and Belgium 26. Rwanda remains committed to offering refuge and assistance to people in need, the Ministry in Charge of Emergency reports.
