On Thursday, September 26, Rwanda welcomed the 19th group of 119 asylum seekers from Libya, the first group after extending the evacuation agreement until December 31, 2025.

At Kigali International Airport, they were welcomed by Habinshuti Phillipe, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry in charge of Emergency Management, alongside Belen Calvo Uyarra, Ambassador of the European Union to Rwanda, and Aissatou Dieng-Ndiaye, UNHCR representative in Rwanda.

The evacuees originate from five nationalities: 41 Sudanese, 36 Eritreans, 12 Somalis, 17 Ethiopians, and 13 South Sudanese.

In 2019, the Government of Rwanda, in collaboration with the African Union, UNHCR, and other partners, set up a program to help migrants who had been living in difficult conditions in Libya while waiting to reach Europe.

The first group of 66 evacuees arrived in Rwanda on September 26, 2019. Since then, over 2,400 have been received, with 1,835 resettled to third countries.
