Five days ago, Rwanda's U20 national football team, Amavubi, was called up to represent the country in the upcoming CECAFA U20 tournament set to take place in Tanzania from October 6th to 20th. This tournament serves as a qualifier for the U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The tournament will feature teams from across East Africa, including hosts Tanzania, defending champions Uganda, Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, South Sudan, and Sudan. Amavubi U20 will be coached by Eric Nshimiyimana, who is determined to guide the team to qualify for the U20 AFCON. Earlier this week, the squad traveled to Bugesera District for a training camp in preparation for their journey to Tanzania. The squad announcement surprised many, as two well-known players, Ndayishimiye Didier from AS Kigali and Hoziana Kennedy from Marine FC, were initially left out. Ndayishimiye is currently playing in the Rwanda Premier League and has already scored this season, while Hoziana Kennedy has captained the U15 and U17 national teams and participated in the recent CECAFA U18 tournament. However, following media attention and questions about their exclusion, coach Nshimiyimana added Ndayishimiye Didier to the squad, explaining that there had been confusion about his nationality. Ndayishimiye has since joined the team in camp and is expected to be the captain during the tournament.
