Rwanda champions APR FC have officially informed the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) that they will not participate in the 2026 FERWAFA Super Cup, citing dissatisfaction with the way the competition has been organised. The decision comes after FERWAFA announced that, for the first time, the Super Cup would feature four teams from the 2025/26 season: APR FC, Rayon Sports, Kiyovu SC and Police FC. The competition had traditionally been contested between two teams — the Rwanda Premier League champions and the Peace Cup winners. APR FC had reportedly expressed concerns over the expansion of the competition, particularly the fact that the club was not consulted before the new format was introduced. FERWAFA Secretary General Bonnie Mugabe confirmed on Tuesday, August 11, that the federation had received APR FC’s letter. “We received the letter yesterday, August 10, 2026, at 5:39 p.m. from the APR FC Secretariat. Their reasons will be reviewed, and they will be informed of the next steps in the coming days,” Mugabe told Imvaho Nshya. The 2026 FERWAFA Super Cup is scheduled to begin with the semi-finals on August 22, with the final set for August 28, 2026. APR FC are the defending champions after defeating Rayon Sports 4–1 in last year’s final. The withdrawal now leaves FERWAFA with the task of determining how the tournament will proceed and whether APR FC’s decision will affect the announced competition format.
