FC Barcelona have reached an agreement with Newcastle United to sign England international Anthony Gordon in a deal worth more than £69 million, according to BBC Sport.
The Spanish giants moved ahead of Bayern Munich in the race for the 25-year-old winger after successful negotiations with Newcastle, with the transfer fee reported to be worth over €80 million (£69.3m).
Gordon is now expected to complete the remaining formalities of the transfer before linking up with the England national team for their World Cup training camp in the United States.
Bayern Munich had also shown strong interest in the forward and held talks with Newcastle, but the Bundesliga club failed to meet the Premier League side’s valuation.
Anthony Gordon enjoyed an impressive season at Newcastle United, scoring 17 goals in all competitions and becoming one of the club’s most important attacking players.
Despite Gordon still having a contract running until 2030, Newcastle appeared increasingly willing to sanction a sale as part of a major squad rebuild following a disappointing campaign that saw them finish 12th in the Premier League.
The transfer will also financially benefit Everton, Gordon’s former club, who are set to receive 15% of the profit Newcastle make from the deal due to a sell-on clause inserted when the player left Merseyside in 2023.
Reports suggest Newcastle had already started preparing for Gordon’s departure during the final weeks of the season, with manager Eddie Howe reducing his playing time and giving opportunities to younger players.
Supporters also sang Gordon’s name after Newcastle’s final-day defeat to Fulham in what appeared to be an emotional farewell.
The move is expected to become one of the standout transfers of the summer window as Barcelona continue strengthening their squad ahead of next season.
