Renovation work at Huye Stadium has reached 80% completion, raising hopes that one of Rwanda's most important football venues will return to action in August after being out of use for more than a year. The stadium has not hosted a football match for the past 14 months after its old playing surface was removed to make way for a new FIFA-standard artificial turf. Construction began in June 2025, but the project faced several setbacks, including delays in the delivery of construction materials and additional engineering work required to improve the stadium's drainage system. Engineers discovered that the original drainage infrastructure was insufficient for the new artificial surface, forcing the contractor to redesign the project and install a modern water management system before laying the new pitch. The ongoing work includes the installation of multiple layers of crushed stone, underground perforated drainage pipes, waterproof protective fabric, and new drainage channels designed to prevent waterlogging during heavy rainfall. The new artificial turf and infill rubber materials have already been delivered to Huye Stadium and are expected to be installed once the drainage foundation is completed. According to the construction team, the second layer of crushed stone is currently being completed, while the final layer will be installed before work begins on laying the artificial turf. The project is expected to be completed by 15 August 2026, restoring one of Rwanda's key football venues. Huye Stadium, which has a seating capacity of approximately 7,900 spectators, previously served as Rwanda's main venue for international football during the renovation of Amahoro Stadium. It was also the only stadium approved by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for international matches during the 2022/23 season. The venue is the home ground of Mukura Victory Sports FC and Amagaju FC, both of whom were forced to play their home matches at Kamena Stadium and Muhanga Stadium during the 2025/26 season because of the ongoing renovation works. Once completed, the upgraded pitch and improved drainage system are expected to significantly enhance playing conditions and enable Huye Stadium to host domestic and international matches once again.
