Huye Stadium, one of Rwanda’s iconic football venues, is undergoing a major renovation to replace its natural grass pitch with a modern synthetic turf that meets international standards. The decision was officially confirmed on May 13, 2025, following persistent challenges caused by poor drainage that left the pitch waterlogged during heavy rains. According to Mugisha Richard, the Secretary General of FERWAFA and Vice President in charge of Technical Affairs, the renovation works are progressing as planned and are expected to be completed by January 20, 2026. Speaking to Radio/TV10 on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, Mugisha assured that the stadium will be ready for use by that date. “By January 20, 2026, Huye Stadium will be fully upgraded and ready to host football matches,” he said. The renovation project, overseen by the Rwanda Housing Authority, is estimated to cost RWF 765.6 million. Once completed, the new synthetic turf will elevate the stadium’s quality to meet international competition standards, making it suitable for both local and regional tournaments. Currently, Mukura Victory Sports and Amagaju FC, the two main clubs that traditionally host their home games at Huye Stadium, are temporarily playing their fixtures at Kamena Stadium, located nearby. This renovation marks another step in Rwanda’s ongoing efforts to modernize its sports infrastructure and provide world-class facilities for athletes and fans alike.
