The City of Kigali has formally notified Kiyovu Sport Football Club and Gasogi United Football Club that their financial subsidies will be discontinued effective 30 June 2026, following both clubs' rejection of a proposed three-way merger that would have consolidated them with AS Kigali into a single men's team. The decision marks the end of Memoranda of Understanding between the City and each club, which had governed financial support arrangements. In a letter dated 1 June 2026 and signed by Mayor Dusengiyumva Samuel. The City informed Kiyovu Sport that its MoU, running from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026, would not be renewed, and that the financial support it had received would cease at expiry. Earlier this year, the City of Kigali had written to AS Kigali, Kiyovu Sport, and Gasogi United proposing that the three clubs pool their resources and form a single, consolidated men's team for the upcoming season. Both Kiyovu Sport and Gasogi United rejected the proposal, citing the need to protect their clubs' individual identities and histories. Kiyovu Sport formally communicated its opposition in a letter dated 25 March 2026. With the merger off the table, the city moved to redirect its football funding exclusively toward AS Kigali. Gasogi United president Kakoza Nkuriza Charles, in a public statement, acknowledged the end of the partnership with the City, expressing gratitude for a joint talent detection and development programme he said had transformed the lives of young Rwandans and opened pathways in education and football. The City of Kigali will now exclusively support AS Kigali as its official representative team, following the withdrawal of municipal backing for Kiyovu Sports and Gasogi United. This development raises serious questions about the financial survival of these two historically significant clubs as they head into the next season without government funding.
