Mathare United have travelled to Rwanda for an eight-day pre-season camp as they step up preparations for the 2026/27 season. The Kenyan club began their journey from Kenya on Monday and are expected to spend the next eight days in Rwanda, where they will play a number of friendly matches against Rwandan teams. One of the potential highlights of the tour is a meeting with Rayon Sports. The two sides are expected to face each other in a friendly on 16 August 2026, with the match also expected to coincide with Rayon Sports’ unveiling of their new kit for the upcoming season. Mathare United have already spent about four weeks preparing for the new campaign, with head coach David Ouma overseeing training at the club’s camp in Kericho. The Nairobi-based side are looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2025/26 season and return as a more competitive team. Club chief executive Jecton Obure said the decision to hold part of the pre-season in Rwanda was aimed at helping the team build a squad capable of challenging for better positions. Obure said the previous season had been difficult for the club and that management had promised supporters that the team would return stronger. The Rwanda tour is therefore expected to play an important role in assessing the squad, improving tactical organisation and giving players valuable match experience. The friendly matches in Kigali will also give coach Ouma an opportunity to test different combinations and identify areas that need improvement before the Kenyan Premier League season begins later this month. A meeting with Rayon Sports would provide Mathare United with another strong test against one of Rwanda’s leading clubs. Both teams are preparing for demanding 2026/27 campaigns and will use the pre-season period to build fitness, improve teamwork and assess new players.
