Nairobi has been selected to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, defeating bids from London, Munich and Rome to become the first African city to stage the prestigious global track and field event. The decision was announced by World Athletics following a council meeting in Budapest, with Munich awarded the 2031 edition. Beijing will host the 2027 championships, meaning the next three editions will be staged across Asia, Africa and Europe. World Athletics President Sebastian Coe described Nairobi’s bid as compelling and said bringing the championships to Africa for the first time would be a historic moment for the sport. He said the event could help accelerate the development of athletics in Kenya and across the continent while creating a lasting legacy for future generations. Kenya has a strong record in athletics and has previously hosted several major international competitions. Mombasa staged the World Cross Country Championships in 2007, while Nairobi hosted the World Under-18 Championships in 2017 and the World Under-20 Championships in 2021. For Kenya, the 2029 championship will also represent a major opportunity to showcase its athletics tradition on home soil. The country previously failed in its bid to host the 2025 World Championships, making the successful 2029 bid a significant milestone for Kenyan sport. The decision also places Nairobi at the centre of a historic moment for African athletics. For the first time, the world's leading track and field athletes will compete for World Championship titles on African soil, giving the continent a new platform to demonstrate its sporting strength and organisational capacity.
