Trent Alexander-Arnold is heading into a crucial second season at Real Madrid, with new manager José Mourinho giving the England international another opportunity to establish himself at the Santiago Bernabéu.

The 27-year-old joined Real Madrid from Liverpool in June 2025 for a reported €10 million (£8.4 million), arriving with huge expectations. Madrid viewed him as one of the world's most versatile defenders, particularly because of his passing range, crossing ability, set-piece delivery and experience in high-pressure matches.

However, his first season was disrupted by injuries and competition for the right-back position. Alexander-Arnold featured in 35 of Real Madrid's 62 matches in all competitions, starting 27. A hamstring injury kept him out for seven weeks, while a thigh problem later ruled him out for another two months.

Those setbacks prevented him from building consistent form as he adapted to Spanish football. He also shared the right-back position with Dani Carvajal, while Real Madrid experienced managerial changes involving Xabi Alonso and Álvaro Arbeloa.

Despite those difficulties, Alexander-Arnold showed flashes of his quality, particularly with his passing and ability to influence attacks from deep positions. By the end of the season, he appeared more comfortable in Madrid and expressed confidence about the campaign ahead.

Mourinho's arrival could be particularly important. The Portuguese coach values Alexander-Arnold's versatility and can use him not only as a right-back but also in central and midfield areas during build-up play.

Competition remains strong, however, following Real Madrid's signing of Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan. The Dutch international brings pace, physicality and defensive strength. Mourinho could potentially use both players together, as seen during the recent friendly against Fiorentina.

For Alexander-Arnold, consistency will be the key. If he stays fit, improves defensively and maintains his creative influence, he could become an important player for Mourinho's Real Madrid.

The coming season is therefore more than another campaign. It could be the season Alexander-Arnold finally proves that he belongs among Real Madrid's leading stars.
