American basketball star Russell Westbrook has retired from professional basketball at the age of 37, bringing an end to an 18-year NBA career. Westbrook announced his retirement on social media on Wednesday night through a video featuring the voice of actor Michael B. Jordan. “Sometimes you don’t know when it’s over. But you have to get there. And I’ve gotten there,” Westbrook said. The veteran guard had reportedly attracted interest from the Sacramento Kings and Washington Wizards but opted to end his playing career instead. Westbrook retires as the NBA’s all-time leader in triple-doubles, having recorded 209 during his career. He also holds the record for the most triple-doubles in a single NBA season, recording 42 in the 2016/17 campaign, when he was named the league’s Most Valuable Player. Across 18 seasons, Westbrook scored 27,176 points and played for the Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Denver Nuggets and Sacramento Kings. His retirement closes one of the most statistically remarkable careers in modern NBA history.
