Rwanda has officially launched a 9-month Training for Coaches Program aimed at strengthening football development through improved coaching standards and a stronger grassroots sports system. The initiative is led by MINISPORTS in collaboration with RDB Rwanda and Visit Rwanda, in partnership with Atlético Madrid, bringing together 13 selected Rwandan coaches who will undergo advanced training to enhance their technical expertise, leadership skills, and modern coaching methodologies. As part of the program, the Atlético Madrid technical team is currently in Rwanda conducting assessments to identify coaches who will benefit from the training. The selected participants will later travel to Spain for hands-on experience within a professional football environment, gaining exposure to elite coaching systems and performance structures. Atlético Madrid is widely recognized for its strong tactical identity, structured youth development system, and world-class coaching philosophy. Its involvement in Rwanda is expected to bring European-level expertise into local coaching education, helping to modernize training approaches. The program is part of a broader strategy to improve grassroots sports systems in Rwanda. Grassroots development focuses on building strong foundations at community and youth level by improving coaching quality, access to facilities, and structured competition pathways. A strong grassroots system ensures that young players are identified early, trained properly, and guided through a clear development pathway from schools and local clubs to professional football. In this process, coach education is considered one of the most important factors, as qualified coaches directly influence player growth and long-term performance. The initiative also aims to address challenges such as limited access to modern training methods and inconsistent development structures at youth level. By strengthening coaching capacity, the program is expected to improve talent identification and enhance player development across the country. According to organizers, the long-term goal is to create a sustainable football ecosystem where local coaches are fully equipped to train future generations without over-reliance on foreign expertise. This aligns with Rwanda’s broader vision of developing sports as a tool for youth empowerment, employment, and international competitiveness. Ultimately, the program is expected to bridge the gap between grassroots football and the professional game, ensuring a continuous pipeline of skilled players and coaches capable of elevating Rwanda’s football standards both regionally and globally.
