Rwanda’s top-flight football is entering a new era ahead of the 2026/27 season after the Rwanda Premier League secured Bank of Kigali (BK) as its new title sponsor, leading to the competition being renamed the BK Pro League. The rebranded competition will feature an expanded 18-team field, made up of 16 Rwandan clubs alongside Sudanese giants Al Hilal SC and Al Merrikh SC, adding a new dimension to Rwanda’s domestic football. The 18 participating clubs are Al Hilal, Al Merrikh, Amagaju, APR FC, Kigali, Bugesera, Etincelles, Etoile de l’Est, Gasogi United, Gicumbi, Gorilla, Marines, Mukura, Musanze, Police, Rayon Sports, Kiyovu Sports and Sunrise. The new campaign is scheduled to begin on September 4, 2026, with the league entering the season under an expanded financial framework, new performance incentives and specific regulations for the two Sudanese clubs. The decisions governing the new season were approved during the Rwanda Premier League’s ordinary general meeting on August 23, 2026, which brought together the league’s 16 existing members. The league has approved a total budget of Frw 1,280,055,000 for the 2026/27 season.

Clubs to receive Frw 31 million each

One of the biggest changes is the increase in direct financial support for clubs. Each of the 16 Rwandan clubs competing in the BK Pro League will receive Frw 31 million during the season. The money will be paid in two equal instalments of Frw 15.5 million. The first payment will be made before the opening round of matches, while the second will come before the start of the return fixtures. The new package represents a significant increase from the Frw 10 million that each club received during the 2025/26 season.

Winning matches now comes with a financial reward

The league has also introduced a performance-based system aimed at rewarding clubs and players for results. A total of Frw 200 million has been allocated for performance bonuses, with every club receiving Frw 1 million for each league victory. Individual performances will also be rewarded. The Player of the Match will receive Frw 100,000, providing an additional incentive for players to make a decisive impact. According to the approved arrangements, the various prize payments will reach the beneficiaries’ accounts no later than the Monday following each matchweek.

Al Hilal and Al Merrikh bring a new dimension

The 2026/27 campaign will be particularly significant with the inclusion of Al Hilal SC and Al Merrikh SC, two of Sudan’s biggest football clubs. The two Sudanese sides will compete in the Rwandan league but will operate under specific financial and sporting regulations. They will not receive the Frw 31 million club support allocated to the Rwandan teams. Instead, they will be eligible for match-winning bonuses in accordance with the league’s approved regulations and budget. Their players will also be eligible for the same individual performance awards available to Rwandan clubs, ranging from Player of the Match awards to the Player of the Year prize.

Special rule for the league title

The league has also clarified what happens if one of the Sudanese clubs finishes at the top of the overall standings. If either Al Hilal or Al Merrikh finishes first, the club will receive an Honorary Trophy. However, the official BK Pro League championship trophy will go to the Rwandan club that finishes highest among the participating Rwandan teams. This arrangement allows the Sudanese clubs to compete fully in the league while ensuring that the domestic championship remains awarded to the best-performing Rwandan side.

Limits on non-Sudanese players

Specific squad rules have also been introduced for the visiting Sudanese clubs. An Al Hilal or Al Merrikh team will be allowed to field a maximum of six non-Sudanese players at the same time. In addition, no more than eight non-Sudanese players can be named on the official match sheet.

APR FC begin as defending champions

APR FC enter the 2026/27 campaign as the reigning Rwanda Premier League champions, having won the most recent edition of the competition. The Kigali-based club will be among the leading contenders for another title, but their domestic campaign will begin later than scheduled because of continental commitments.

CAF competitions reshape the opening round

The participation of Al Hilal, Al Merrikh, Rayon Sports and APR FC in CAF competitions will have an immediate impact on the opening round of the BK Pro League. The four clubs will not play their opening league fixtures on the scheduled Matchday One dates because of their commitments in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup. The affected fixtures are: - Bugesera vs Al Hilal - Rayon Sports vs Al Merrikh - APR FC vs Musanze The fixtures will be played at later dates to accommodate the clubs’ continental schedules. Matchday One: The new season kicks off on September 4 With the four CAF participants unavailable, the remaining clubs will get the first opportunity to collect points in the new campaign. A new era for Rwanda’s top flight

With the BK Pro League scheduled to begin on September 4, 2026, Rwanda’s top-flight football is entering a season unlike previous editions. The arrival of Bank of Kigali as title sponsor, the rebranding from Rwanda Premier League to BK Pro League, an expanded 18-team competition, increased financial support, performance-based bonuses, the participation of two major Sudanese clubs and the involvement of several teams in CAF competitions will all shape the 2026/27 campaign. For the 16 Rwandan clubs, the increased allocation provides additional financial backing throughout the season. For players, winning matches and producing outstanding individual performances now come with direct financial rewards. Meanwhile, Al Hilal and Al Merrikh bring additional international experience and a new competitive dimension, while defending champions APR FC will be seeking to retain their domestic crown. The 2026/27 season will therefore be more than a race for points and the championship. It will be a test of how Rwanda’s top flight can combine new investment, an expanded competition, international participation and stronger sporting incentives.
