Under the leadership of Alphonse Munyatwari, the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) underwent a significant transformation across all levels of football.
From grassroots development to elite competitions, his tenure was marked by strategic reforms, major infrastructure projects, and a strong focus on youth and women’s football.
Expanding Opportunities for Youth Development
Youth development was a cornerstone of Munyatwari’s administration. FERWAFA introduced U17 and U20 leagues for both boys and girls, creating competitive opportunities for thousands of young Rwandan players. Rwanda’s U15, U17, and U20 teams both male and female lso participated in more international competitions than ever before, gaining invaluable global experience.
To support this growth, 350 new referees were trained, and CAF License B coaching courses were reintroduced to raise technical standards. A digital registration system was launched to manage player data more efficiently, accompanied by training programs that emphasized child safeguarding in football.
Grassroots clubs received support in the form of football kits, balls, and financial assistance. The Bayern Munich Academy in Rwanda saw its first major success when two young players were integrated into the German club’s system. Additionally, 10 football schools were established nationwide to identify and nurture young talent.
Enhancing National Team Performance and Welfare
At the senior level, FERWAFA prioritized improving both the performance and welfare of national teams. Male and female players now stay in 4- or 5-star hotels during international assignments, receive increased allowances, and earn bonuses for victories.
A $100,000 annual sponsorship deal with sportswear brand Masita ensured that national teams are fully outfitted with professional-grade kits. Permanent coaches were appointed for all senior and junior national teams, fostering consistency and tactical development.
Advancing Football Infrastructure
Infrastructure development was another major focus. Four artificial turf stadiums are under construction in Rusizi, Gicumbi, Rutsiro, and at FERWAFA headquarters in Kigali, increasing access to quality playing surfaces. Ten mini-football pitches are also being built within school compounds to support football education and talent development.
FERWAFA completed a new accommodation facility for athletes and plans to build a modern headquarters to replace its current offices, further enhancing professionalism in operations.
Strengthening Competitions and Club Structures
FERWAFA rebranded its top-tier competition as the "Rwanda Premier League" to boost its image and commercial appeal. Prize money for FERWAFA-organized tournaments is set to increase, and for the first time, club licensing regulations have been extended to women’s teams—promoting greater equality and professionalism in both men’s and women’s football.
Institutional Reforms and Digital Governance
In governance, FERWAFA updated its statutes to align with CAF and FIFA standards and adopted a new internal staffing structure to improve service delivery and accountability. A digital platform was introduced to allow stakeholders to file complaints or provide feedback without visiting FERWAFA offices. Training sessions are underway nationwide to familiarize users with the system.
Building a Sustainable Football Future
These initiatives reflect the comprehensive reforms undertaken during Munyatwari’s tenure. His leadership emphasized not just immediate gains but long-term sustainability through youth development, infrastructure investment, gender inclusion, and transparent governance. Under his vision, FERWAFA is guiding Rwandan football toward a more professional and competitive future.
